Our Stump Grinding Process

Every property and stump is different. Before grinding begins, we consider the stump's size, location, nearby landscaping, accessibility, and your plans for the area.

The stump is then ground below the surrounding grade using specialized equipment. Most stumps can be ground to approximately eight inches below grade, although the appropriate depth may vary depending on site conditions and future landscaping plans.

The grinding process converts much of the stump into wood chips and mulch while avoiding the extensive excavation associated with removing the entire root system.

Stump Grinding vs. Complete Stump Removal

Stump grinding and full stump removal are different processes.

Stump grinding reduces the visible portion of the stump below grade while leaving much of the underground root system in place. This usually causes less disruption to the surrounding landscape.

Complete stump removal involves excavating the stump and significant portions of its root system. This creates a substantially larger disturbed area and may require additional soil and landscape restoration.

For many residential properties, grinding provides the more practical solution. Our arborists can recommend an approach based on what you intend to do with the space afterward.

Using the Area After Stump Grinding

Once the stump has been ground, the area may be prepared for grass, a landscape bed, another landscape feature, or a future planting.
