Guardian Crew in Burns Park

Saturday April 27th was a day of community service for Guardian as we planted, pruned, and cared for trees in Burns Park in honor of Arbor Day.

It was a beautiful sunny day with a park full of residents, volunteers, children, and dogs, all eager to see what was happening in the trees. Most everyone enjoyed a free Red oak to take home, and a Ray’s Red Hots’ Wolverine Dog from the grill.

Guardian and Peace Neighborhood plant tree in honor of Rose Martin

Last Friday the team from Guardian Tree Experts joined forces with the smiling children from Peace Neighborhood Center in Ann Arbor to plant a tree in honor of Rose Martin. Rose founded the center back in 1971 and served as a shining light to thousands of people. We were more than happy to give back on Arbor Day by planting a tree honoring an inspiration such as Rose.

Guardian Tree Experts show two students how to climb a tree!

This past Friday, climbing experts from Guardian Tree Experts, showed two excited 12 year olds how to climb a tree. The duo, Annalore Tuplin, an eighth grader at Emerson, and her cousin Rebecca, who was visiting from London, got the thrill of going 30 feet up an Oak tree. They were rigged up in saddles and taught how to self ascend into the branches and then climb their way around the tree for the bird’s eye view of Dexter. Check out these cool photos…..

Guardian purchases a Resistograph!

For years, we’ve wanted to be able to provide our clients with more information about the internal structure of their trees. After all; it’s difficult to perform a tree structure evaluation without being able to determine whether or not there are internal hidden defects. The resistograph will allow us to take a closer look at the interior part of your tree and will help prevent otherwise sound trees from being condemned based on hunches. We cannot control Mother Nature but with this tool we can more accurately predict the likelihood of tree failure.

A Resistograph is a tool that is based on the principle of measuring drilling resistance. A very small drill bit is inserted into the wood under constant pressure. While drilling, the energy required to move the bit through the wood is measured and printed out on a graph (which looks a lot like a polygraph report.) By examining the printed graph, we can determine the location and significance of decay, cavities, and cracks inside trees.

Now that we own this tool, we can provide our clients with much more accurate information regarding the structural integrity of their trees. With this information, we can work together with our clients to make informed decisions about the fate of their trees.

Sophie Wilson Richardson

We are pleased to announce the arrival of the newest member of the Guardian team, Sophie Wilson Richardson. There was some resistance at first, but she gave in at 5:58 PM on Monday, December 20th of last year. Born to the company owner, Jack Richardson, and his wife, Emily Wilson-Tobin, we expect she will improve our outfit considerably. She will release a statement to the public regarding her ideas for the company as soon as she learns how to speak. Until then, we will be doing our best to fall in line.

Greenhills Chipping

A couple weeks ago, we volunteered our time and our chipper to help Greenhills School remove invasive species from their property. Organized by the 9th Grade Principal, Emily Wilson-Tobin, approximately thirty ninth graders participated in the event. Most of what we removed from the campus was buckthorn, perhaps the most notorious invasive plant here in our area. Over the years, the buckthorn had spread so much that it was preventing natives from growing in the wooded area behind the school. With the help of the Natural Area Preservation team, we successfully removed the plants and applied herbicide to their stumps so that they are less likely to re-sprout in future years.

Michigan’s Champion Downy Hawthorn

Late last fall, I received an email from a client (we’ll call him “Joe” for the purpose of this post) requesting consultation on his church’s champion Downy Hawthorn (Crataegus mollis.) Joe and I work together to care for many noteworthy trees on the grounds of various commercial properties he manages around town, but none of these trees has been a certified champion tree. Needless to say, I was quite excited to be involved.

Kris and I met Joe on site to take a look at the tree a few days later. Thanks to some invasive buckthorn removal in previous years, accessing and viewing the tree was easy…especially since the tree dwarfed its neighboring hawthorns in comparison. When we finally approached the tree, Kris and I were impressed with the girth of the trunk and the spread of the crown. We certainly hadn’t ever seen a hawthorn that large before.

Overall, the tree is in good condition. We noticed some deadwood, old stubs, and a small amount of diseased tissue as well as a potential weak point located where the two main stems come together. We also noticed some vigorous grass growing underneath the tree as well as some interference from other nearby trees.

Based on our visual assessment, we recommended the following services: herbicide application to competing grasses and invasive species, soil sample analysis to prescribe an appropriate fertilization program, soil amendment with composted manure, mulching with woodchips, fungicide applications this spring, pruning, and cabling.

The goal of the services we are providing is to improve the growing conditions of the tree, reduce competition by nearby vegetation, remove dead and diseased tissue, and reduce the risk of the tree failing in a storm. With annual fertilization, fungicide treatments, and careful monitoring, we hope to keep the tree in good health…and maintain its champion certification for years to come.
